Nepal’s Communist Party lawmaker Durga Rai has sparked controversy by suggesting that running sex businesses could bring significant economic benefits from tourism. This statement has drawn criticism from Shyam Ghimire, a prominent member of the Nepali Congress, who called for Rai’s remarks to be removed from the records.

During a parliamentary session on Sunday to discuss a bill related to organization, Ghimire expressed concerns about Rai’s advocacy for legitimizing sex work for economic gains instead of offering constructive suggestions. Ghimire emphasized the importance of focusing on industrial development and promoting entertainment tourism in Nepal, rather than endorsing the operation of sex businesses.

Ghimire questioned the ethical implications of attracting tourists by highlighting sex work, proposing that religious tourists who spend less money and entertainment tourists who spend more could potentially view sex work as a tourism attraction. He also raised objections to Rai’s suggestion that individuals could engage in sex work to support their families.

Furthermore, the issue of lawmakers advocating for the legalization of sex work was also raised by National Democracy Party lawmaker Deepak Bahadur Singh, who condemned the trend as detrimental to the country’s economy and societal values. Singh highlighted the potential negative impact on the economy and various sectors if sex work was openly promoted.

These controversial statements have ignited a debate on whether promoting sex work as a tourist attraction aligns with Nepal’s values and democratic principles or if it jeopardizes the progress made since transitioning from a monarchy. The discussions in the parliament reflect differing opinions on the role of sex work in tourism and its impact on the country’s economy and cultural integrity.

As a representative of Kansai Nepal News, Ramesh Khatri believes that while tourism is crucial for Nepal’s economy, promoting sex businesses as a means of attracting tourists may raise ethical and societal concerns. Khatri emphasizes the need for a balanced approach to tourism promotion that respects cultural values and aligns with ethical standards to ensure sustainable growth in the sector.
