In Kathmandu, the National Chyau Day is scheduled to be organized on the upcoming 15th of Poush. During a press conference held here on Saturday, the organizer Chyau Producer Farmers Association of Nepal informed about the fair to be held at Bhrikutimandap.
The president of the association, Santosh Karki, mentioned that the fair will run from 10 in the morning until 5 in the evening with about 40 stalls showcasing various exhibitions related to chyaus in different categories. He also highlighted that the fair will display chyau products, as well as practical demonstrations of mushrooms, bamboo shoots, ferns, and stinkhorn mushrooms.
Karki further explained that the event will feature exhibitions of essential items for different types of chyau production, cultural performances with the presence of national artists, and various programs. The entry to the fair will be free, and visitors can also sample chyau products without any charge.
With an estimated cost of around Rs. 25 lakhs for organizing the fair, it is expected that approximately 15,000 visitors will attend the event. The association shared that currently, there are about 35,000 farmers engaged in chyau cultivation in Nepal, contributing to a chyau seed production capacity of 67 in laboratories with a business turnover of approximately Rs. 15 billion.
According to the association, chyau cultivation has expanded to 70 districts in Nepal, of which 40 are involved in commercial production. The Chyau Producer Farmers Association of Nepal had conducted the Mechi Mahakali ‘National Chyau Awakening Campaign’ from Poush 9 to Poush 29, 2076.
The association and chyau producers pressurized to declare a day as Chyau Day, considering that if all fields yield chyau production in the month of Poush, one day of that month should be declared as Chyau Day. The Mechi Mahakali ‘National Chyau Awakening Campaign’ was held in Hetauda, the capital of Bagmati Province, on the 15th of Poush in 2076.
On the same day, the Chyau Federation and farmers accepted the request, and the Bagmati Province Government officially declared Chyau Day at the provincial level, as informed by the association.
