Nepal’s Vice President Ram Sahay Prasad Yadav addressed the impact of climate change, emphasizing the need for proactive measures to mitigate its effects on the country. Highlighting the serious implications of climate change, he pointed out the dwindling water sources in the Terai region and the direct impact on around two billion people living in riverbank areas in Nepal.

Since committing to zero carbon emissions by 2045, Nepal has appealed for financial and technical support from the global community to achieve this goal. Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher JB Rana also noted that climate change has now become a judicial issue, with the courts showing sensitivity towards the matter in various decisions, especially concerning environmental management in the Sagarmatha region.

Minister of Forests and Environment, Aina Bahadur Shahi, acknowledged that climate change has been hindering Nepal’s development goals. In response, Nepal is preparing to implement the Climate Change Act 2082 to address the adverse effects on the country’s development objectives.

The government’s initiative to raise global awareness on climate change through the “Sagarmatha Dialogue” has been commended, with Minister Shahi urging for its successful implementation. Furthermore, UN representative for Nepal, Hana Singh Hamdi, emphasized that Nepal should lead in seeking justice related to the impact of climate change, especially in the Himalayan region.

Ramesh Khatri, representing Kansai Nepal News, shared his opinion on the news, stating that Vice President Yadav’s call for international cooperation in tackling climate change reflects the urgency and seriousness of the issue. He also highlighted the importance of Nepal’s proactive approach in addressing climate change through legal frameworks and global partnerships.
