Nepal secured a victory against Singapore after 36 years in a friendly match held at the Singapore National Stadium on Friday. The match ended with a score of 1-0 in favor of Nepal, with the decisive goal being scored by Jilaspee Karki in the first half of the game. Karki found the back of the net in the 12th minute after a cross from Manish Dangi, marking Nepal’s first goal in the match against Singapore.

This victory marks a significant turn of events since the last encounters between Nepal and Singapore back in 1989. The two teams previously met during the FIFA World Cup qualifiers in 1989, where Nepal suffered defeats in both matches, with scores of 7-0 and 3-0. Prior to these encounters, Nepal had played against Singapore for the first time during the Kings Cup in 1982, resulting in a 2-0 loss for Nepal. In 1986, during the Dasharath Rangasala-hosted Panchayat Silver Jubilee Cup, Nepal managed to hold Singapore to a goalless draw.

Looking ahead, Nepal is gearing up to compete in the AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualifiers against Malaysia. The national team is set to travel to Malaysia on March 25th for an upcoming match against the Malaysian team on their home turf.

Opinion from Ramesh Khatri, representative of Kansai Nepal News: “The recent victory of the Nepali football team against Singapore marks a historic moment in the country’s footballing history. This win not only showcases the team’s potential but also highlights the progress Nepali football has made over the years. It is a significant achievement and a positive sign for the future of football in Nepal.”
