On the first day of the New Year, Lumbini witnessed a surge in domestic and Indian tourists flocking to the sacred site. Home to the Mayadevi Temple, the birthplace of Lord Gautam Buddha, Lumbini was bustling with visitors exploring the various stupas and monasteries scattered around the area.

Mayadevi Temple premises, the central canal, and the stupas were crowded with both domestic and Indian tourists. Lumbini stands as a focal point for the pilgrimage of both domestic and Indian tourists.

According to Rajan Basnet, an official from the Lumbini Development Trust, over 20,000 visitors flocked to the Mayadevi Temple for a glimpse on the first day of the year. The overwhelming number of visitors at the temple led some to speculate that even more people may have visited but could not enter due to the crowds.

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, many domestic tourists who were confined to their homes in 2020 found solace in visiting Lumbini at the dawn of 2021. Those who made the pilgrimage to Lumbini on the first day of the year expressed their desire to start the year with peace and tranquility from the sacred grounds of Lumbini.

As a representative of Kansai Nepal News, Ramesh Khatri expressed his satisfaction with the surge in tourism to Lumbini, highlighting the spiritual significance and appeal of the site to visitors from both within Nepal and across the border in India. He emphasized the importance of preserving and promoting Lumbini as a cultural and historical treasure for future generations.
