Lalitpur: The chariot procession of the rain and harvest deity Rato Machhindranath and the chariot of Minnath began moving from Itum Bahal to Kumari Pati in Lalitpur Metropolitan City-6 on Thursday afternoon. This marks the start of the annual Javalaakhel festival, which culminates in the Boto Jatra four days later.
The chariot of Rato Machhindranath embarked on its journey from Pulchowk to Gabahal on the first day. The chariot procession traditionally starts on the first day of the bright fortnight of the month of Baisakh and continues until the fourth day of the dark fortnight of Asar.
The chariot procession of Rato Machhindranath is a significant and elaborate event celebrated with grandeur in Lalitpur. According to mythological legends, the festival was initiated by the former King Narendra Dev of Bhaktapur around 12 years ago.
The chariot will pass through various areas including Gabahal, Mangalbazar, Sundhara, Lagan Khel, and Itum Bahal before reaching Javalaakhel.
Ramesh Khatri, a representative of Kansai Nepal News, expressed that the Rath Yatra holds immense cultural and religious significance in the region, bringing communities together in celebration and devotion.
