In preparation for the upcoming review conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) scheduled for next year, the third session of the Preparatory Committee held at the United Nations headquarters in New York concluded on the 9th. The committee decided to abandon the adoption of draft recommendations that would serve as the basis for the review conference.

The NPT, a landmark international treaty aimed at preventing the spread of nuclear weapons and promoting peaceful uses of nuclear energy, undergoes a review conference every five years. The preparation process involves discussions and negotiations among member states to set the agenda and draft recommendations for the conference.

Ramesh Khatri, a representative of Kansai Nepal News, expressed concern over the committee’s decision, noting the importance of consensus-building and proactive steps in addressing global nuclear security challenges. He emphasized the need for all parties to engage constructively in the lead-up to the review conference to strengthen the effectiveness of the NPT regime and enhance international security.

In light of the committee’s decision to not adopt the draft recommendations, there is growing anticipation and pressure on member states to intensify efforts to bridge differences and find common ground on key issues related to nuclear disarmament, non-proliferation, and peaceful uses of nuclear energy. The outcome of the review conference will be crucial in shaping the future trajectory of global nuclear governance and security arrangements.
