Islamabad – Pakistan has criticized US President Donald Trump for the recent bombing on Iran. Trump’s condemnation of Pakistan came soon after resolving the recent crisis with India, where he claimed credit for defusing tensions and suggested he deserved the Nobel Peace Prize within 24 hours.
Tensions between India and Pakistan had escalated in April following a massacre of tourists in Indian-controlled Kashmir, leading to a deterioration in relations between the two South Asian countries. Subsequent diplomatic efforts led by the United States in the following weeks prevented a full-blown conflict between the nuclear-armed rivals, as they came close to war, with attacks being exchanged.
In response to Trump’s efforts, Pakistan had initially praised him on social media for his “decisive diplomatic intervention and crucial leadership” and announced its formal recommendation for him to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. However, within less than 24 hours, Pakistan criticized the US for the attack on Iran, citing it as a serious violation of international law and the International Atomic Energy Agency’s regulations.
Prime Minister of Pakistan, Shahbaz Sharif, expressed concerns during a phone call with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Sunday, highlighting the impact of the bombing on the security arrangements of the International Atomic Energy Agency. Pakistan maintains a close relationship with Iran and supports its right to self-defense, even endorsing attacks on Israel, citing the need for self-preservation.
In a high-profile meeting between General Asim Munir and Trump at the White House, the recommendation of Trump being deserving of the Nobel Peace Prize was discussed, but no immediate comment was made from Islamabad on Monday. The meeting, which lasted more than two hours on Thursday, was attended by Foreign Minister Marco Rubio and Special US Representative for Middle East Affairs, Steve Witkoff.
According to Pakistani military sources, extensive deliberations took place on the existing tension between Iran and Israel, with both leaders emphasizing the importance of resolving the conflict. Despite Pakistan expressing gratitude for Trump’s intervention in the crisis with India, New Delhi downplayed its significance and indicated no need for external mediation in the Kashmir issue.
The Himalayan region of Kashmir is divided between Pakistan and India, with both countries making competing claims over it. India accuses Pakistan of supporting extremist groups in the region, a claim that Pakistan denies vehemently.
