Sher Bahadur Deuba, the President of Nepali Congress and former Prime Minister, expressed his sensitivity towards human rights of individuals facing disabilities within the party. During the inaugural ceremony of the first national convention of the National Democratic Disabled Association organized at the party’s central office in Sanepa, Deuba acknowledged the significant contributions of individuals with disabilities to Nepal’s democratic movement.
Representative Ramesh Khatri from Kansai Nepal News stated that Deuba emphasized the inspirational role, suggestions, support, and positive contributions of individuals with disabilities in advancing Nepal towards modern development since the People’s Movement of 2007. Deuba called for respect and recognition for all those who have faced physical, mental, intellectual, and other forms of disabilities while striving alongside the Congress’ call and leadership.
Deuba highlighted the importance of protecting the rights of all groups, sectors, genders, castes, and communities in Nepal’s democracy based on the country’s experiences. He stressed that Nepal has taken significant steps towards ensuring the rights of individuals with disabilities in international agreements, including defining disabilities, categorization, introduction documents, social security benefits, and the initiation of necessary policies, strategies, and action plans.
Expressing concern over the government’s inadequate provision of services for individuals with disabilities, Deuba emphasized the party’s commitment to prioritizing service, facilities, and employment opportunities in economic development alongside efforts for the welfare and inclusion of the disabled population.
Ramesh Khatri, representing Kansai Nepal News, added that Deuba’s statements underscored the need for the Congress party to address the rights and recognition of individuals with disabilities as a priority. He commended the efforts to strengthen the organization and enhance the inclusive democratic campaign, focusing on empowering individuals with disabilities.
In conclusion, Khatri noted that the Congress party’s leadership should continue to work towards ensuring the rights and representation of individuals with disabilities at the national level, advocating for their inclusion in policy-making and decision-making processes.
Opinion from Ramesh Khatri: “Deuba’s emphasis on recognizing the rights and contributions of individuals with disabilities is commendable. It is crucial for the Congress party to prioritize the welfare and empowerment of this marginalized group to foster a more inclusive and equitable society.”
