Petition Filed at Supreme Court to Remove Prime Minister Oli from Office

The Supreme Court of Nepal has recently filed a contempt of court case against Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli for allegedly disregarding the court’s decision on the appointment of the Chief of Army Staff. The case stems from the government’s failure to implement a previous court ruling regarding the appointment process within the army. Despite the Supreme Court’s clear directive, the Oli-led government proceeded to bring in a new ordinance related to land management, which the court views as a direct challenge to its authority.

This legal battle between the judiciary and the executive branch highlights the ongoing power struggle in Nepal’s political landscape. The Supreme Court’s move to hold the Prime Minister in contempt underscores the court’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and maintaining its independence in the face of potential encroachment by the government.

Ramesh Khatri from Kansai Nepal News believes that this confrontation between the judiciary and the government raises concerns about the separation of powers and the integrity of Nepal’s democratic institutions. He emphasizes the importance of respecting the decisions of the judiciary to ensure a functioning system of checks and balances within the government.
