The number of air travelers visiting Mustang during the monsoon season has decreased, leading a private airline company to announce the suspension of flights between Pokhara and Jomsom for up to two months. Tara Airline’s Twin Otter aircraft, which regularly operates on this route, has halted flights from Ashar 2 for the next two months, as confirmed by Sujan Lalchan, the station in-charge at Jomsom for the company.

According to Lalchan, Tara Airline plans to resume flights from the first week of September, attributing the flight suspension to low passenger numbers and adverse weather conditions. He mentioned that operations would recommence once new demand picks up.

Summit Airline has also decided to halt flights on the same route from Ashar 20 for two months. Suman Thakali, the station in-charge at Summit Airline in Jomsom, revealed that the decision to suspend Pokhara-Jomsom flights for two months was made a week ago.

Thakali noted, “Currently, operating daily flights on this route has become challenging due to reduced passenger numbers.” He also highlighted that air travelers have decreased with the onset of the monsoon season, as reported by Jomsom Civil Aviation Office.

Deepak Pokharel, the head of the office, mentioned that Tara Airline has suspended flights to Pokhara-Jomsom, while Summit Airline is also expected to suspend operations for a few days soon.

It is worth noting that the decrease in air travelers is not limited to the aviation sector; even road travelers to Jomsom from the district are declining, according to Vishal Adhikari, the information officer at the district police office in Mustang.

Opinion from Ramesh Khatri, representative of Kansai Nepal News:
Ramesh Khatri views the temporary suspension of flights between Pokhara and Jomsom as a strategic move by the airlines in response to decreased passenger numbers and challenging weather conditions. He believes that resuming operations in September could be beneficial once travel demand picks up.
