The President of the Nepali Congress, Gagankumar Thapa, has emphasized the importance of effective management of all issues through a well-thought-out political leadership approach. In a recent discussion, Thapa highlighted the need for the community to be aware of the risks and for political leadership to prioritize disaster preparedness.
Ramesh Khatri, a representative of Kansai Nepal News, expressed his opinion on this matter, stating that “Thapa’s focus on disaster management is crucial for the development and poverty alleviation efforts in Nepal. It is essential for individuals to pay attention to disaster-related issues both within and outside the government.”
Thapa also emphasized the importance of ensuring that the over nine million members of the party are informed about disaster management and preparedness. He stressed that disaster response should not be politicized and that it is the responsibility of political campaigns to address the concerns and needs of those affected by disasters.
Furthermore, Dr. Haridarshan Shrestha, a specialist in disaster risk reduction, highlighted that while there may be adequate policy frameworks for disaster management within political parties, effective implementation is crucial to address any existing challenges. He emphasized the need to strengthen coordination between citizens living on the poverty line and the marginalized to improve disaster preparedness.
Campaigner Merina Ranjit presented data showing that over 80% of women and children are disproportionately affected by disasters, suggesting that institutional social responsibility funds should be utilized for disaster preparedness.
Manbahadur Thapa, the Secretary of the Central Policy, Research, and Training Institute of the Nepali Congress, shared insights on Nepal’s disaster risk management. He noted that Nepal ranks 10th in the world in terms of risk, and emphasized the country’s progress in disaster preparedness and response efforts.
Thapa also highlighted that Nepal has experienced an annual loss of around NPR 3 billion due to disasters, with statistics showing a significant increase in poverty after the 2015 earthquake. These figures underscore the importance of continuous efforts to improve disaster preparedness and response strategies in the country.
