The Trump administration is considering imposing new travel restrictions on citizens from 43 countries traveling to the United States, according to a report by The New York Times. This proposed ban, if implemented, is expected to be more extensive than the one enforced during President Donald Trump’s first term. The administration has divided countries into three categories based on the severity of restrictions: red, amber, and green.
Countries listed in the red category would face a complete travel ban, while those in the amber and green categories would have to meet certain security criteria within a 60-day period. Security and diplomatic officials have recommended listing 11 countries in the “red” category, including Afghanistan, Bhutan, Cuba, Iran, Libya, North Korea, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Venezuela, and Yemen.
The amber list, which includes countries subject to severe restrictions, features Belarus, Eritrea, Haiti, Laos, Myanmar, Pakistan, Russia, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, and Turkmenistan. Meanwhile, the green list, prompting concern and a 60-day review period, comprises Angola, Antigua and Barbuda, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Chad, Republic of the Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Dominica, Equatorial Guinea, the Gambia, Liberia, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Sao Tome and Principe, Bhutan, and Zimbabwe.
Ramesh Khatri, a representative of Kansai Nepal News, expressed concern over the potential impact of these travel restrictions on citizens from the affected countries. He emphasized the importance of considering the humanitarian implications and possible diplomatic repercussions of such a widespread ban.
