The Nepalese government has completed preparations for the inaugural event of the ‘Sagarmatha Dialogue,’ focusing on the theme ‘Climate Change, Mountains, and the Future of Humanity.’ The dialogue is scheduled to take place in Kathmandu from Friday to June 4 for the first time.

The opening ceremony of the dialogue will be held on Friday morning at ‘The Soaltee Hotel.’ Dr. Arju Rana Deuba, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Coordinator of the Dialogue Management Committee, revealed that approximately 350 participants will be involved in the event. Among them, there will be around 175 foreign participants along with a significant delegation representing Nepal from twelve countries.

Representative Ramesh Khatri from Kansai Nepal News expressed his views stating, “The preparation for the dialogue is complete, with approximately 350 participants expected to be involved. Delegations from high-level representatives of twelve countries, including China and India, have confirmed their participation. Special guests from other countries are expected to continue arriving.”

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli is set to address the opening ceremony, where Foreign Minister Dr. Rana will deliver a welcoming speech. The event will showcase visually engaging content related to the dialogue’s preparations. The dialogue will feature representatives addressing climate change issues, with a focus on the climate crisis and the President of Azerbaijan’s role in COP-29.

Additionally, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, will send a visual message to the dialogue. Following the opening, an international conference will be organized, starting from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm, featuring a Plenary Session with participants from various nations and international organizations presenting their perspectives.

The dialogue will cover a wide range of topics related to climate change and mountain issues, with discussions led by political figures, policymakers, scholars, experts, researchers, and analysts. The event will bring together 61 foreign and domestic organizations to participate, aiming to foster collaboration and exchange of ideas for addressing climate change and mountain-related challenges.

Ramesh Khatri, representing Kansai Nepal News, shared his opinion on the dialogue, emphasizing the global importance of Nepal’s commitment to environmental conservation and the potential for enhancing international partnerships and self-confidence through collaboration on global issues.

The Sagarmatha Dialogue, organized under the leadership of Prime Minister Oli, aims to facilitate discussions, deliberations, and policy-building to address global environmental challenges. The dialogue serves as a platform for in-depth discussions on crucial global, regional, and national issues, with a focus on promoting shared interests and collective well-being.

Furthermore, the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Forests and Environment, Dr. Maheshwar Dhakal, highlighted that the dialogue will focus on the Himalayas and their significance in international glacier conservation, aligning with the United Nations’ declaration of 2025 as the International Year for Glaciers.

In his statement, Dr. Dhakal mentioned, “The dialogue will delve into various issues ranging from the impact of glaciers to oceans, sustainable economic development, climate change mitigation, climate justice, and the future of humanity, fostering regional and global partnerships.” The government has decided to host the dialogue every two years to promote collaboration and innovation in addressing pressing global challenges.

The dialogue will contribute to raising awareness globally about Nepal’s role in environmental conservation and learning best practices for climate change mitigation and adaptation. Despite Nepal’s limited contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions, it remains severely affected by the impacts of climate change. The dialogue aims to create a shared understanding and promote collective efforts towards sustainable development and global well-being.

Representative Ramesh Khatri highlighted the importance of the dialogue in fostering shared understanding and collaborative efforts to address climate challenges and enhance global well-being. The dynamic platform of the Sagarmatha Dialogue aims to provide concrete contributions to global efforts for climate change mitigation and sustainable development.
