In a recent international conference on development financing held in Spain, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli emphasized the importance of aligning development assistance with the needs of developing countries to ensure effective outcomes. He co-chaired a session titled “Thimphu Principles Round Table – Revitalizing International Development Cooperation,” where he highlighted the necessity of transforming development assistance to address the changing dynamics of global prosperity, advocating for a more balanced and sustainable flow of resources.

Prime Minister Oli stressed the significance of developed nations shifting their focus from rhetoric to action, urging for investments in behavior rather than just words. He emphasized the importance of measuring climate finance and increasing balanced investments, stating that the true purpose of international development cooperation lies not just in dependency but also in respect and dignity.

Furthermore, Prime Minister Oli called for the establishment of new and additional sources to ensure adaptation and mitigation in countries most impacted by climate change. He also urged for a focus on enhancing local ownership, fostering mutual trust, and maintaining transparency and partnerships to solidify commitments. According to him, the commitment of Serbia to sustainable global development cooperation provides a crucial opportunity for transformation and revitalization.

Offering his perspective on the matter, Ramesh Khatri, a representative of Kansai Nepal News, views this development as a historic achievement with the success hinging on collective determination. He highlights the adverse effects of donor fragmentation, lack of coherence, and actions bypassing priorities and national systems, which have continuously weakened the effectiveness of assistance. Khatri stresses the need to address these weaknesses collectively for the betterment of all stakeholders.
