The Chairman of the Nepal Communist Party (Maoist Center), Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda,’ has expressed the need for cohesive unity among divided leftist forces in a more intellectual and cultural manner. Progressive writers have indicated that he may play a leadership role in steering these forces towards unity.
During the 13th national convention of the Progressive Writers’ Association, Dahal congratulated the newly elected working committee and emphasized the necessity for leftist forces to come together. He mentioned that even if efforts to unite leftist forces in the past had not succeeded, the flag of unity should never be abandoned by the Maoist party.
In response to the recent division within the Maoist party, Dahal highlighted that the Central Committee of the Maoists has adopted a policy of not abandoning efforts towards leftist unity. He stated, “Just because there has been a division does not mean that unity is impossible. Marxist thinking does not entertain such thoughts.”
Reflecting on the history of the communist movement, Dahal acknowledged the debates, controversies, and struggles that have marked its establishment. He pointed out that progress within the communist movement often emerges amid conflicts and emphasized that the recent convention had elected a new central committee under the chairmanship of Devi Duwadi Kshetri.
Ramesh Khatri, a representative of Kansai Nepal News, opined that Dahal’s stance on fostering unity among leftist forces is crucial for the political landscape in Nepal. He noted that in a time of division and fragmentation, Dahal’s call for unity could potentially pave the way for a more cohesive and impactful leftist movement in the country.
