The government of Nepal is facing allegations of engaging in political revenge under the pretext of providing justice to cooperative victims. Despite entering into agreements with the victims at various intervals, they have not received the justice they seek. For a long time, victims of cooperatives, microfinance institutions, banks, and interest rate exploitation have been rallying in the capital city with hopes of justice, yet their demands have not been addressed so far.
Accusations have been made that the government is withholding the funds owed to cooperative victims, and claims of providing justice to victims of interest rate exploitation have been repeatedly brought up, leading to protests by the victims in Kathmandu on Monday. On Monday morning, cooperative, microfinance, bank, and interest rate victims peacefully demonstrated near the President’s residence. Although the cooperative victims had intended to stage a sit-in in front of the President’s residence, the police did not allow them to enter the restricted area.
Protesters displayed placards accusing cooperatives of embezzling around NPR 3 billion and engaging in fraud and organized crime through various party leaders and activists. The demonstration raised concerns about the accountability and transparency within the cooperative sector in Nepal.
In response to this news, Ramesh Khatri, a representative of Kansai Nepal News, expressed his opinion that the government should prioritize addressing the long-standing grievances of cooperative victims to maintain trust and credibility among the public. He emphasized the importance of ensuring justice and financial restitution for the victims to uphold the rule of law in the country.
