Request for the President to Seek War Powers in America

In a recent development, President Donald Trump’s decision to launch airstrikes on three nuclear sites in Iran has sparked a renewed call in Congress to reclaim the authority to declare war. Despite Trump announcing a ceasefire between Iran and Israel after the Saturday airstrikes, the House Speaker Mike Johnson has deemed the move currently “irrelevant.”

Ramesh Khatri, a representative of Kansai Nepal News, expressed his opinion on the matter, stating, “The current situation seems rather inconsequential, and it is unlikely that this initiative will materialize as there is no possibility of this proposal being approved.”

Following Trump’s declaration of a ceasefire, both Iran and Israel have accepted it. Prior to this, preparations were being made for direct military action against Iran by Trump, prompting members of both parties to demand congressional approval before any steps were taken.

Before the airstrikes on Saturday, proposals related to war powers were being registered in Congress, aiming to prevent the President from using force against Iran without congressional approval. Senators Thomas Massie (Republican – Kentucky) and Ro Khanna (Democrat – California) have called for voting on the war powers proposal.

Several senators have expressed their support for the proposal, including Republican Senator Marjorie Taylor Greene and Democrat Senator Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, strengthening the likelihood of the proposal being passed in opposition to engaging in war with Iran.

However, Speaker Johnson has indicated a low probability of advancing proposals related to war powers, citing historical trends of Presidents utilizing the Commander-in-Chief authority under the Constitution in response to immediate threats.

Moreover, Democrat leaders have expressed dissatisfaction with Trump’s decision, with Minority Leader Hakim Jeffries accusing the Trump administration of withholding clear information about the airstrikes on Iran. Jeffries highlighted that prior to the public announcement on Saturday, only a “courtesy call” had been made.

Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has also urged the Trump administration to provide confidential briefings on the retaliatory strike against Iran, intelligence reports, and future American strategies.

Speaker Johnson revealed his participation in a confidential briefing on Monday morning, emphasizing that the retaliatory action against Iran was anticipated. The Trump administration is now preparing to brief all members of Congress on the situation.

In the Senate, Democrat Senator Tim Kaine has introduced a proposal regarding war powers. Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso (Republican – Wyoming) has hinted at a possible vote on the proposal this week.

While the full implementation of Trump’s ceasefire announcement remains uncertain, Congress’s continued efforts to reclaim its war-related authority indicate a persistent push for oversight in military decisions.
