Senior journalist Bhairav Risal passed away at the age of 97 on Sunday. He was undergoing treatment for heart and lung-related ailments at Frontline Hospital in Baneshwor.
Born on July 13, 1924, in Bhaktapur, Bhairav Risal was a respected figure in journalism. Prior to his demise, he had announced his decision to donate his body for medical study at Patan Hospital.
Throughout his career, Bhairav Risal received various awards for his work on human rights, environmental conservation, and journalism. He hosted the radio program ‘Uhile Bajeka Palama’ on Radio Sagarmatha for a long time. Risal, known for his leftist ideology, contested in the 2048 BS general elections as a candidate from Bhaktapur on behalf of the Nepal Workers and Peasants Party.
He served as the Chief News Editor at the National News Committee (RASAS) and had been dedicated to journalism and community service for a long time. Before joining RASAS, he worked in the statistics department. Risal was the author of several books, including ‘Sadhu lai Suli’ (Jail Diary), ‘Logne Swasni’, ‘Kehi Mitra Ko Chithi’, and ‘Bhairav Dai’. He is survived by his wife, two sons, and two daughters.
