Seoul – In a recent development, the South Korean President, Yun Suk-Yol, who was facing impeachment charges, was ordered to be taken into custody on procedural grounds by the court. However, he was released from detention on Saturday after being held in special custody following his arrest in January on charges of attempting to subvert the civilian government.

After his release, Yun expressed gratitude towards the people of the country, as stated in a press release issued by his lawyers. Earlier, a court had revoked his arrest warrant citing legal and procedural reasons. The prosecutors investigating this decision stated in a statement on Saturday that the decision was “unjust.”

The prosecutors had the right to appeal against the court’s decision and they succeeded in securing Yun’s release by arguing about his detention regarding the specific criminal charges against him. Details about the legal basis of his detention were discussed during the hearing.

Yun’s ongoing impeachment process and the issue of whether he should be removed from office or not will also have to be addressed in the face of the Constitutional Court’s decision. The prosecutors mentioned that the Chief Justice had directed the formation of a “Trial Court” to actively present their arguments to have Yun released from custody.

If Yun is removed from office, a new presidential election will have to be held in South Korea within 60 days. Even after being formally removed from office, he will still face legal proceedings against him.

According to AFP correspondents, after his release from custody, Yun rode in a special car amidst many other vehicles directly to the presidential residence, where he emerged from his car outside the presidential building to greet his enthusiastic supporters.

Meanwhile, Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-Myung addressed the crowd, stating that the suspended president’s authoritarian rule continues to have an impact and they will continue to fight against it.

Former prosecutor Yun had been accused by the opposition of sending troops to parliament to suppress democratic South Korea by imposing a political crackdown in December.
