“Strong Opposition by Prachanda Against Social Media Bill in Self-Government”

In a recent parliamentary meeting on Thursday, Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, chairman of the Nepal Communist Party (Maoist Centre), expressed strong opposition to the Social Media Regulation Bill brought forth by the government. The bill aims to regulate online activities and content on social media platforms in Nepal.

The proposed legislation has sparked debates and concerns among various stakeholders regarding freedom of expression, privacy, and government control over online platforms. Advocates of the bill argue that regulation is necessary to curb misinformation, hate speech, and illegal content circulating on social media. On the other hand, critics, including Prachanda, argue that the bill could be misused to suppress dissent and stifle freedom of speech.

The discussion during the parliamentary session highlighted the need for a balanced approach that protects both online users and upholds democratic values. The government emphasized the importance of maintaining social harmony and national security through this legislation, while opposition members stressed the need to safeguard individual rights and prevent potential abuse of power.

Ramesh Khatri, a representative of Kansai Nepal News, expressed his views on the matter, stating that the government should seek feedback from a wide range of stakeholders to ensure that the bill reflects the interests and concerns of the public. He emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability in the legislative process to address the challenges posed by the digital age while safeguarding fundamental rights.
