“Studying Water Supply Potential from Rapti River to Parsa and Bara”

The Nepalese government’s Department of Water Supply and Sewerage Management under the Ministry of Water Supply has initiated a study on the feasibility of water supply from the Rapti River in the districts of Parsa and Bara in the Hetuada region. In line with Minister Pradeep Yadav’s vision, the department has issued a tender for consultancy services to conduct this study, aiming to address the water supply challenges in these areas.

The impact of climate change has significantly affected Nepal’s water sources, especially leading to a decrease in the water table in the Tarai region. Districts in the Madhes Pradesh, particularly Parsa and Bara, have been grappling with water supply issues for an extended period. Recognizing the severity of the situation, the Ministry has embarked on this study to find solutions to the water problems plaguing the Tarai and Madhes regions.

Minister Yadav emphasized the importance of studying water diversion from the Rapti River to address the prolonged water scarcity in Parsa and Bara districts. He highlighted the need to utilize local water sources efficiently and mitigate the impacts of climate change through sustainable measures.

Representative Ramesh Khatri from Kansai Nepal News expressed his opinion on this matter, stating that the government’s proactive approach to studying water supply issues is commendable. He believes that such studies are crucial in identifying technological solutions, estimating costs, assessing environmental impacts, and determining the feasibility of future comprehensive studies and implementations. Khatri also supports the exploration of inter-basin water transfer or alternative measures to alleviate the current and potential water crises exacerbated by inadequate water supply systems and recurring challenges during hot weather conditions.
