In Bhairahawa, the lack of teachers in mathematics and science subjects since the beginning of the academic session has left students at the Navjeevan Aadharbhut Vidyalaya in Rohini Gaunpalika-4 feeling unsettled. As the annual exams approach, the absence of teachers for these two subjects has led students to express their concerns by staging protests at the school office and even demonstrating against the Gaunpalika administration.
Students in grades 6, 7, and 8 are worried about how they will be able to take exams in mathematics and science. Laxman Gupta, one of the students, mentioned feeling stressed as the exams draw near. He expressed, “We have been studying diligently so far, but the internal conflicts between the School Management Committee, principal, and local government have disrupted our preparations for the exams.”
According to Madhu Ghimire, the head of the Education Department in the Gaunpalika, the vacant teaching positions have not been filled with new appointments despite efforts to advertise and recruit new teachers. He explained that initially, they were searching for a teacher, but the process was stalled without progress. Even when the name Gangaram Yadav was suggested, the paperwork did not move forward. Ghimire also acknowledged the impact of political interference on the students.
With the current situation, even if new teachers are hired, there might be a delay in completing the syllabus, which could result in students having to take exams under self-study conditions. The principal of the school, Janardan Yadav, highlighted the challenge of not having teachers to check the answer scripts for science and mathematics. He mentioned, “A teacher was supposed to join from Ramnaresh Secondary School, but hasn’t arrived since Kartik 6. He was supposed to return to the same school.” Yadav added, “The uncertainty of when the teacher will arrive is causing instability in teaching these subjects.”
