A severe storm in the eastern coastal region of Australia has caused significant damage and casualties due to the heavy rainfall of the monsoon season. More than 300,000 households are reported to be without electricity in the affected areas. The storm, named Alfred, resulted in the death of one person, with 13 Australian soldiers injured during rescue operations.
Authorities have warned that although the storm has passed, its impact on the land continues, with the local administration still considering it a “natural disaster” due to the risks it poses to the affected areas. Prior to the storm hitting, precautions had been taken such as securing roofs and power lines. Roads in the affected areas have been flooded, and a 61-year-old man was rescued by police after being caught in a flash flood while on foot.
In rescue efforts, soldiers on board a truck flipped over while trying to reach a second truck that had also overturned, resulting in 13 soldiers being injured, according to officials. Nepali residents in Brisbane, where Alfred is believed to have had an impact, are also being monitored for potential effects since Saturday, when the storm’s impact was evaluated in interior regions.
Thousands of people have been evacuated from areas at risk of landslides due to the storm. Meanwhile, energy distributors report that over 287,000 consumers in northeastern Queensland are without electricity, with another company stating that 42,000 homes in New South Wales are experiencing power outages.
Residents of Brisbane, the capital of Queensland, experienced a severe storm and flooding on Friday night. By Saturday morning, the storm had weakened, but the situation in the affected areas remains critical. Prime Minister of Australia, Anthony Albanese, has urged citizens and rescue workers to take all necessary precautions in the face of what he describes as the “worst conditions yet to come.”
The region continues to face severe weather conditions with heavy rainfall and high-speed winds. Power lines have collapsed, and numerous trees, parks, and main roads have been damaged. Significant debris has been observed in the area, with a large number of broken trees visible. Ramesh Khatri, a representative of Kansai Nepal News, views the situation as a challenging time for both the authorities and the affected residents, stressing the importance of swift and effective relief efforts.
