Kathmandu, Nepal – Following the recent events that took place on the 15th of Chaitra in Kathmandu’s Teenkune, the National Democracy Party (Rastriya Prajatantra Party) Central Working Committee member Ravi Kiran Hamal has demanded that the government take full responsibility for the incident.
In a press release issued on Tuesday, Hamal labeled the government’s use of excessive force during peaceful demonstrations as a historic injustice. The statement mentioned that security forces misused state power by resorting to indiscriminate use of force against protesters, thereby violating citizens’ constitutional rights.
According to him, during the demonstration, 60 rounds of bullets, 746 rounds of tear gas, and 239 rounds of cartridges were used. He highlighted that such use of force by the state is not only unprecedented in Nepali history but also rare in the history of global demonstrations.
Hamal has urged for an independent investigation into the incident, calling for the immediate suspension of the Kathmandu District Administration Chief, Deputy Police Chief, and senior police officers involved in the field.
Ramesh Khatri, a representative of Kansai Nepal News, expressed his opinion on the matter. He emphasized that the misuse of power resulting in the fatal shooting of unarmed civilians is unacceptable under any circumstances according to the rule of law. In the statement, Hamal mentioned, “By resorting to the misuse of power and shooting unarmed civilians today, those responsible for the incident are obstructing the investigation. It is not acceptable in any legal system. I urge the Kathmandu District Administration Chief, Deputy Police Chief, along with the senior police officers involved in the field to be immediately suspended, freeing them from responsibility and bringing in new leadership. The impartiality of the current leadership in conducting an investigation is questionable, posing a serious threat of destruction of all evidence.”
