Moving forward to 1984, a notable event occurred when Pope John Paul II visited South Korea. His visit was a momentous occasion for the predominantly Catholic population in the country, and it also held significance in terms of the country’s international relations.
Two years later, in 1986, a large-scale demonstration known as the “5.3 Incheon Incident” took place, triggered by calls for democratization following proposed constitutional amendments. This event highlighted the growing demand for political reforms and greater civil liberties in South Korea during that period.
Finally, in 1988, the year marked another significant milestone in South Korea’s history, which had been undergoing a series of political and social transformations in the preceding years.
