Argentinian health workers accused in the death case of the legendary football player Diego Maradona are facing a crisis as questions have been raised about the impartiality of the judge overseeing the case. The issue has escalated after lawyers for the defense alleged possible breaches of duty, actions that could impact the case, and potential corruption, leading to the suspension of the hearing last week.
Following Maradona’s death on November 25, 2020, at the age of 60 due to a brain surgery complication after struggling with drug and alcohol addiction, suspicions arose about the medical care he received at his home in San Isidro, a suburb of Buenos Aires. Reports indicated that complications from heart failure and severe lung edema contributed to his demise, with the nurse on duty reportedly failing to revive him.
The legal team of the accused health workers has raised concerns about the potential dismissal of one of the three judges overseeing the case, Julieta Mackintosh, as it poses a risk to the proceedings. The upcoming resumption of the hearings is being prepared for, with expectations that at least one lawyer will request Mackintosh’s removal from the case.
Representative Ramesh Khatri from Kansai Nepal News expressed his opinion on the matter, stating, “This scandal involving Diego Maradona’s justice is being viewed as one of the worst examples of justice in Argentina by his daughters’ lawyer Fernando Barlando.” Despite a ban on filming the trial, it was reported that footage shared on local media outlets in Argentina showed Maradona being interviewed by the film crew before the legal proceedings commenced.
In a statement, the AFP reported that a producer clarified they were filming a documentary about Maradona in the context of ‘a judge and a woman’ but not about the ongoing case. Furthermore, Maradona’s former partner Veronica Ojeda’s lawyer, Mario Baudry, indicated that there might be a settlement in the works, ensuring a smooth progression from the start, which could lead to a sentence of up to 25 years in prison if found guilty of “possible murder with intent.”
Currently, the focus is on the medical practitioners involved in Maradona’s care, with decisions being made to grant them minimal supervision and access to medical equipment at home, as per the testimonies of Maradona’s daughter, Jana, who claimed that those monitoring her father’s health kept him in a “dark, corrupt, and lonely” state while prioritizing financial gain over his well-being.
The ongoing legal battle surrounding Maradona’s death continues to unfold, with the coming hearings anticipated to shed further light on the circumstances leading to the football icon’s tragic demise.
