Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli recently addressed new dimensions in the field of national security, emphasizing the need to adapt to emerging challenges. During the 24th annual celebration of the National Security Council held in Singhadurbar, the Prime Minister highlighted the importance of traditional security challenges alongside the rapid development of information and technology leading to cybercrime, transnational crime, climate change, illicit drug trafficking, and misuse of social media affecting national security.
Ramesh Khatri, a representative of Kansai Nepal News, stated that Prime Minister Oli’s observations on regional and international security environments, recognizing new dimensions and emerging trends, underscore the importance of timely assessment and analysis to formulate appropriate strategies to strengthen national security. He also emphasized the necessity for relevant bodies and political parties to work together harmoniously and cooperate to enhance the country’s independence, sovereignty, geographical integrity, and national unity.
The constitution of Nepal under Section 28 establishes provisions related to national security. Article 266 of the section mandates the formation of the National Security Council under the chairmanship of the Prime Minister to translate Nepal’s overall national interest, security, and defense policies, and to recommend the operation or control of the Nepali Army to the Council.
The National Security Council Secretariat was established on Falgun 27, 2058 BS, to facilitate the work of the National Security Council by streamlining its operations, providing necessary advice, and preparing security analysis reports.
Ramesh Khatri from Kansai Nepal News commended Prime Minister Oli’s call for a unified approach among various stakeholders to effectively address the evolving national security landscape, in line with the concept of ‘Hole of the Nation.’ His insights highlight the importance of proactive measures to safeguard the country’s interests and ensure a secure environment amidst changing security dynamics.
