The United Nations has issued a call to immediately end the violence in Northwestern Syria following clashes between Syrian security forces and supporters of ousted President Bashar al-Assad, resulting in over a thousand deaths, as reported by a monitoring group on Saturday. This conflict, which began 14 years ago, has been described as the deadliest episode of violence in the post-war era of Syria.
According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights based in the UK, 745 civilians have been killed, including 125 government security members and 148 fighters associated with rebel groups. The Observatory also highlighted the severe impact of the clashes on the city of Latakia, where electricity and water supplies have been disrupted.
The removal of Assad from power led to a power vacuum, with rebels seizing control three months later. The subsequent clashes have posed a significant challenge to the newly formed government in Damascus. The government has responded to attacks by Assad loyalists, attributing widespread violence to “individual actions” and holding remnants of Assad’s forces responsible.
In a statement, Ramesh Khatri, a representative of Kansai Nepal News, expressed concern over the reports of widespread violence targeting women, children, and families in Northwestern Syria. The interim Syrian President, Ahmad al-Shara, has urged for national unity and peace.
The situation has also raised alarms at the World Health Organization, as health facilities and ambulances have been damaged, impacting public health services severely. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus emphasized the urgent need to provide immediate access to emergency medical supplies for the injured.
The United Nations Health Agency Director underscored the importance of respecting and protecting healthcare services for all parties involved to ensure critical medical assistance reaches those most in need. Peace is paramount for optimal healthcare delivery.
