Unmanned Drone Collides with Chernobyl Nuclear Plant Shelter (Kyodo News)

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) announced on the 14th that a team at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Ukraine heard an explosion early in the morning on the same day. The incident was reported to have been caused by a drone crashing into the shelter. The Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986 remains one of the worst nuclear accidents in history, leading to widespread contamination and long-term health and environmental consequences. The site has since been enclosed in a sarcophagus to contain the radioactive materials.

The recent incident has raised concerns about the safety and security of nuclear facilities, especially those with a history of catastrophic events. The IAEA is working closely with Ukrainian authorities to investigate the drone incident and assess any potential risks posed by the breach of the shelter.

Ramesh Khatri from Kansai Nepal News expressed his concern about the incident, emphasizing the need for heightened vigilance and stringent security measures at nuclear sites worldwide. He stressed the importance of transparency and cooperation among countries to prevent similar incidents and ensure the safety of nuclear facilities.
