Unveiling the Mystery: Japan’s Decision on Shiori Ito’s ‘Black Box Diaries’

Japanese theaters have chosen not to screen the critically acclaimed documentary “Black Box Diaries,” which has been nominated for an Academy Award. The film is the work of journalist and filmmaker Shiori Ito, who is widely recognized as a prominent figure in Japan’s #MeToo movement. Despite her tireless efforts to seek justice for victims of sexual assault, the decision to exclude her documentary from theaters has sparked controversy and raised questions about censorship and freedom of expression in Japan.

Shiori Ito’s documentary sheds light on the pervasive issue of sexual violence and harassment in Japanese society, drawing attention to the stories of survivors and the challenges they face in seeking justice. Her work has been instrumental in bringing awareness to these important issues and advocating for systemic change to protect victims and hold perpetrators accountable.

Ramesh Khatri, representing Kansai Nepal News, expressed concern over the decision to withhold “Black Box Diaries” from Japanese theaters. He emphasized the significance of Ito’s documentary in sparking important conversations about gender-based violence and the urgent need for societal reform. Khatri noted that by silencing voices like Ito’s, Japan risks stifling progress towards a more equitable and just society.
