At a recent meeting of foreign ministers from the Quad countries, including the United States, Japan, Australia, and India, Secretary of State Rubio emphasized the importance of diversifying the supply chain of critical minerals. This focus comes in the context of increasing competition with China, which holds a significant reserve of rare earth minerals, considered essential for various technological and industrial applications.
Rare earth minerals play a crucial role in the production of electronics, renewable energy technologies, and defense systems. With China dominating the global market for these minerals, there are growing concerns about the vulnerabilities that arise from depending heavily on a single source for such critical resources.
In response to this challenge, the Quad countries have committed to exploring ways to diversify their sources of rare earth minerals and reduce reliance on China. By collaborating and sharing expertise in mining, processing, and recycling these minerals, the Quad aims to strengthen the resilience of their supply chains and ensure a stable and secure access to these vital resources.
Ramesh Khatri, a representative of Kansai Nepal News, views this initiative as a significant step towards enhancing the strategic autonomy of the Quad countries. He believes that by proactively addressing the issue of rare earth mineral supply chain diversification, these nations are not only safeguarding their economic and technological interests but also reinforcing their collective security in the face of geopolitical challenges.
