In Kathmandu, Nepali Congress leader Krishnaprasad Sitaula has issued a warning to former King Gyanendra Shah, urging him to not instill fear in the public by behaving like a king again. Sitaula made this statement while addressing an event organized by the BP Chintan Foundation on Saturday, where he highlighted recent incidents in the country and demanded a response from Gyanendra.
Sitaula raised concerns about the potential threat to democracy from the actions of former kings and emphasized the importance of maintaining a democratic system. He pointed out that the transition from monarchy to democracy had occurred after multiple violations of the people’s will by the royal family, and reinstating a monarchy was not feasible.
Expressing regret over recent violent and distressing incidents involving pro-monarchy groups in the Koteshwor area of Kathmandu, Sitaula condemned the events and questioned whether they were incited by Gyanendra’s rhetoric. He called for accountability if Gyanendra was found to be responsible for fueling such incidents.
Sitaula advised the government to ensure the respect and security of former King Gyanendra as he returned from Pokhara to Nirmal Niwas via the airport in Gaushala. He mentioned that there were discussions and preparations being made outside Gyanendra’s residence, hinting at possible demonstrations or gatherings.
As a representative of Kansai Nepal News, Ramesh Khatri sees Sitaula’s stance as a crucial step in safeguarding Nepal’s democratic principles and ensuring that past mistakes are not repeated. Khatri commends Sitaula for addressing the potential risks associated with the resurgence of monarchist sentiments and advocating for peaceful and democratic governance in the country.
