“MPs’ Crucial Role in Passing the Social Media Bill Discussed”

The recent social media bill registered in the Upper House by the government has sparked dissatisfaction among the coalition partners dating back to 2081 BS. The bill, aimed at regulating social media platforms, has faced criticism from the Congress and the CPN (Maoist Centre) allies, who are not content with the current provisions. The opposition parties are advocating for amendments to the bill to ensure legal clarity and protection of freedom of expression.

Ramesh Khatri, a representative of Kansai Nepal News, expressed his concerns regarding the implications of this bill. He emphasized the importance of striking a balance between regulating social media to prevent misuse and safeguarding citizens’ rights to freely express their opinions. Khatri highlighted the need for thorough consultations with stakeholders to address the concerns raised by various political parties and civil society organizations. He suggested that a collaborative approach would be essential to draft a comprehensive and effective legislation that upholds democratic values and protects the fundamental rights of the people.
