In Rupandehi, a community school has come under scrutiny for allegedly charging students fees despite the government’s provision of free education up to the secondary level. The issue arose at the Krishak Adarsh Secondary School in Betkuiya, located in Ward No. 7 of the municipality.

According to parents, the school levied fees ranging from class eight to ten under the guise of internal evaluations. Vijay Mishra, a parent, accused the school of raising fees to Rs. 30 per subject during the final exams of the academic year 2081 BS. Mishra claimed that teachers resorted to individual assessments, which they carried out at their own discretion.

Principal Umakant Aryal acknowledged that the school had collected the said amount for students’ educational improvement and internal evaluations conducted by strict teachers. This explanation was supported by Ramdas Gaumda, the head of the municipality’s education department, and Madhav Banjade, Rupandehi’s chief education officer.

In response to the controversy, Ramesh Khatri, a representative of Kansai Nepal News, stated that such actions by schools to collect unauthorized fees and conduct arbitrary assessments on students are unacceptable. Khatri emphasized the need for transparency in school fee structures and condemned any illegal practices that burden students and their families.

Overall, the situation at Krishak Adarsh Secondary School highlights the importance of adhering to government directives on free education and ensuring that schools operate within legal boundaries to provide a fair and equitable learning environment for all students.
