“Prime Minister prepares for dialogue on Mount Everest”

Nepal is gearing up for the upcoming Sagarmatha Dialogue program scheduled to take place in Kathmandu from Jestha 2 to 4. Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli presided over a preparatory meeting on Sunday to discuss the overall planning for the event. The meeting, held at the Prime Minister’s residence in Baluwatar, proposed the formation of a steering committee under the leadership of Prime Minister Oli to guide the dialogue. Foreign Minister Dr. Ajay Shankar Rana Deuba is leading discussions on forming the executive committee for the dialogue under his coordination.

Additionally, preparations are underway for the organization of the event, with the establishment of an executive committee and a secretariat. Minister of Forests and Environment, Ain Bahadur Shahi Thakuri, and economic and development advisor to the Prime Minister, Dr. Yuvaraj Khatiwada, are actively participating in the coordination of the dialogue. A proposal has been put forward to have a secretariat at the Prime Minister’s office for the coordination of the dialogue.

Countries like India, China, and other South Asian nations have been invited to the dialogue program, with special invitations extended to heads of state or government officials. The event aims to be successful in promoting national and international communication through various media outlets. The government has already launched the ‘Sagarmatha Dialogue’ website to provide information about the program.

In a bid to make the main event inclusive, a pre-event has been proposed to involve a diverse representation of stakeholders, including women and children, senior citizens, youth, indigenous groups, marginalized regions, and classes. Furthermore, various private sector entities, such as the Nepal Tourism Board and the Confederation of Nepalese Industries, are set to collaborate on side events and exhibitions to promote tourism development in Nepal.

The international dialogue program aims to engage all sectors of society and governments at all levels. The announcement to host this event in Kathmandu was made by Prime Minister Oli on the occasion of the International Year of Glaciers, 2025. This marks the government’s commitment to centralizing climate change, the Himalayas, and the future of human life, with plans to organize such global dialogue events every two years.

Opinion from Ramesh Khatri, representative of Kansai Nepal News: “The upcoming Sagarmatha Dialogue program holds significant promise for fostering international cooperation and addressing critical issues facing Nepal and the global community. Prime Minister Oli’s initiative to host this event demonstrates a proactive approach towards engaging stakeholders and finding solutions for pressing challenges.”
