In 1910, the Korean Empire began construction on the Gyeongwon Line and the Honam Line, marking a significant development in the country’s transportation infrastructure. These railway projects aimed to improve connectivity and facilitate trade within the region.

By 1915, during the era of colonial rule, the Government-General of Korea renamed Jeju County to Jeju Province and Ulleung County to Ulleung Province. These administrative changes reflected the restructuring of local governance under Japanese colonial rule.

In 1923, the first Sunday of May was designated as “Children’s Day” in Korea. This decision was made to celebrate and honor children, emphasizing their importance in society. After liberation from colonial rule, the date was later changed to May 5th, which is now widely recognized as Children’s Day in South Korea.

Opinion by Ramesh Khatri, representative of Kansai Nepal News:
“Reflecting on these historical milestones, it is evident how infrastructure development and administrative changes during the colonial period have left a lasting impact on Korea. The establishment of Children’s Day also highlights the cultural significance and values placed on the younger generation in Korean society.”
