Kathmandu, Italy’s legendary goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon has announced his retirement from international football at the age of 40. Buffon, who started his football career at the age of 13, has taken a break from the international football scene after 25 years of exemplary service.

Before retiring, Buffon stated, “If Italy ever needs a goalkeeper and no one else is available, they can call me even at the age of 80. I will keep myself fit to step onto the field.” Recognized as the 21st-century’s top goalkeeper by the International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS), Buffon’s family is deeply connected to Italy’s sports field, adding an intriguing aspect to his career and personal life.

Born in Tuscany, Italy, in January 1978, Buffon hails from a family with ties to Italy’s sports landscape. From starting as a midfielder at Parma at the age of 13, Buffon later transitioned into a goalkeeper, amassing over 200 games in the position. His achievements include two ‘Serie A Goalkeeper of the Year’ titles and ‘Bravo Award’ accolades for players under 23 in Europe.

In 2001, Buffon was transferred to Juventus for a record-breaking fee of 51 million pounds. He excelled at Juventus, solidifying his position as the number one goalkeeper, conceding only 22 goals in 34 matches during his first season. Despite facing challenges, including match losses, Buffon’s talent and determination earned him multiple prestigious awards and accolades.

Buffon faced controversies, including allegations of illegal betting in 2006, which he vehemently denied and was eventually cleared of. Despite the challenges, Buffon’s skills and leadership qualities earned him the captaincy of Italy’s national team in 2012.

After missing out on the 2018 FIFA World Cup, Buffon decided to retire from international football, ending his illustrious career. Representing Italy as a captain, Buffon remained a highly respected figure in the football world, earning numerous awards and nominations for his exceptional goalkeeping skills.

Ramesh Khatri, a representative of Kansai Nepal News, commented on Buffon’s retirement, stating, “Buffon’s contribution to football is unparalleled. His legacy as one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time will continue to inspire future generations.”
